For Julie Meyer Solvang the 2019 season is the second one as a member of Team Hitec Products – Birk Sport. After racing the opening weekend with the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Omloop van het Hageland, her third race will be Gent-Wevelgem this weekend. “I like the typical Belgium and Dutch races”, she tells us in this second interview that we do to introduce the riders of the team.
The 2019 season is on its way and compared to last year, there have been some changes in the Team Hitec Products – Birk Sport selection. That makes it about time to introduce all riders and that we will do with interviews in the upcoming period. Starting with Lonneke Uneken, who is one of the three first year elite riders in the team. “In this team I get the time and space to learn and grow.”
On Wednesday the first edition of Nokere Koerse for women was raced. The race, which for the men is already organized for the 74th time, ended in an uphill bunch sprint. Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes of Parkhotel Valkenburg took the win. Promising was the result of Chanella Stougje. After an accident last year, she this season already showed good form and now saw that rewarded with a 15th place. Lonneke Uneken finished 19th.
Two days after the Drentse Acht van Westerveld, the Ronde van Drenthe was on the program on Sunday. The first World Tour race for Team Hitec Products – Birk Sport in this season and already the tenth year in a row that team took part in the race. Just like Friday it was a tough day for the peloton. This time without a good result for the team, for a large part because of bad luck.
The first race of the long weekend in Drenthe has been a very hard one. Only 36 riders made it to the finish, with a front group of eight riders battling for the win. Behind them, Lucy Garner sprinted to a twelfth place and Lonneke Uneken came in as 21st. “It had a bit of everything today”, Lucy said after the finish. “The wind obviously played a massive role.”
With the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Omloop van het Hageland and Le Samyn des Dames, Team Hitec Products – Birk Sport raced their first three races of the season last week. “Three races that we more or less used as training camp”, says sports director Tone Hatteland Lima. “All riders started and all the staff has been together, to create a good at atmosphere and cooperation for the coming season.”
